  • Mikuni Carb for Briggs Vanguard

I have had it with the POS carb on the 18 hp Vanguard in the green Attex. Its time to upgrade to a mikuni. Anybody attempt this yet? Anyway I will start with a 26mm unit and work my way up. Photos to come.

There is a upgrade kit for the briggs with the mikuni. They use twin 34mm. Here is a link to their site.

Thanks Lewis, Robbie. The 18 in the Attex is not modified much and Mud Buddy and Brandons engines are either highly modified or bigblocks. The Briggs stock carb on the 18 Hp is about 26 mm on the manifold with a rather restrictive venturi. The 26mm mikuni has a larger throttle passage but should give good throttle response. Its funny the 26 Mikuni is used on a 90cc scooter and you would think it was too small for a 400+ cc 4 stroke. if the 26 is too restrictive i have a 34 to try out.

You might look at the vanguard section of heymow.com - Lawn Mower Racing Forum - Index

one guy, Ryan Kerr in Ontario uses twim Mics on a 10,000 rpm 14/16 block vanguard. Otherwise you might find ideas on an adapter for the stock manifold. E.C. sells modified 2 barrels for $200, and an intake for it would be a $100. Heymow's sale forums just had a 2 bbl and intake for a $100. The 20 hp manifold will fit 14 through 20. The 23 intake is different.

Ryan Kerr's 10,000 rpm "14/16" C.I. vanguard. Can you say.. two stroke clutch needed?

Or PVT below, click on custom parts. 90* mikuni adapters. Oh how about the holley 2 bbl on top of the blower

                Performance V-Twins

They do run better with seperate intake runners, venturis, like the stock briggs 2 bbl.

Is the one barrel you had trouble with a nikki or tikki.

I installed twin 26 mms mikuni on my 16 horsepower vanguard and they work great.had to go up too main jet sizes to 110 and a yamaha banshee thottle two into one and had to fabricate the intakes but well worth the effort pictures in galleries under vanguard.

How is the argo gearbox going to stand up to to 10,000 rpm? Cryogenic treatment?

I have my doubts about an Argo transmission, but I know for a fact that T-20 certainly would. They have held up to high horsepower, high performance engines without issues. I think that's why pretty much every racer runs the T-20.
