  • jlo L 297 L question

I have a Jlo L 297 L in an early model max ii that has not run in many years but has good compression, carb is clean, but no spark I pulled the engine and I am getting ready to tear into it but have no experience with this type of engine and would like to find a good manual and any advise on what to look for or possibly parts supplier. The manual on this site is hard to read as it didn't copy well, any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks, Mike.

I am in NE Ohio (Youngstown) and I have rebuilt a bunch of these. Is there something specific you want to know? You may just need to clean the points or they need replaced. I would check that first.

Thanks for the reply, I live in Rome just north of Orwell so not that far away, this is the first 2 stroke I've seen with points and condenser and will be checking them first, the fact that they are under the flywheel makes it more difficult, I am used to Kohler and briggs with remote location and a simple cover. Do you know of a good source for the points and condenser for these engines? The motor number is 29716633 if that helps, I've also seen that the carbs on these are problematic, do you have any recommendations for a more reliable replacement if needed? Sorry about all the questions, I am new to the aatv world and would like to get this engine running to try it out as I have never driven one before but have been riding dirt bikes and four wheelers since the late 70's. The other option I have is to replace the engine with an 18 hp vanguard I have or the engine out of my 99 Polaris sportsman 500 but those options offer up their own set of issues although a four stroke may be better for crawling around in the woods I would like to keep the machine as stock as possible for now. Hopefully one day we'll meet up on the trails or possibly pine lakes if you are going and I get the issues worked out.
      Thanks,
      Mike

Dennis Kirk always helps me with odd ball carburetor kits.

I bet a smaller Mikuni would work well on that engine.

I run a Mikuni in all of mine. They work great. I buy a lot of stuff from MFG Supply when it comes to gaskets, points, etc. https://www.mfgsupply.com/
