  • B&S break in

My BS 18hp has new rings, pistons, and cyl sleeves. It has not been run. What is the your recommendation for break in?

According to the literature for the 30HP bandolero motor (which is just a modified 20HP Briggs), they recommend the following:

    1. Start the engine and let it warm up for several minutes at idle speed allowing the operating temperature to stabilize.
    2. Turn the engine off and let it cool completely. Do not change the oil at this time.
    3. Drive the Car (or ATV) Vary the speeds up and down moderately for approximately 30 minutes making sure that the clutch is engaged for proper break-in of the rings.
    4. Change the oil and filter after this break-in period. Check for debris and make sure no excessive debris is found.
    5. Replace the filter and fill oil to the halfway mark on the dipstick.
    6. Go have fun.

I agree with what Mike has posted, with the exception of the initial warm up. This is usually meant for the cam break in, and it sounds like your cam/lifters have been re-used.
Basically, just let it warm up to normal operating temp before putting too much stress on it, then don't beat on it for the first 5 hours or so.
