  • Set Screw on max axle

I have a loose sprocket on my 2000 max iv and tightened the set crew on it and still loose so i took it out and was wondering if anyone knows if they use 2 set screws I know on some things they use a set screw and put a another one on top of it to keep it from backing out all I had at the time was a allen socket so it wouldnt go down in the hole deep enough so know I was going to try a regular allen wrench but was wondering before i do it

they do use 2 set screws. they also loctite them in so if you apply a little heat it will come out alot easier

I wish that I have saw this thread before i started changing the bearings on my Max IV! I got the left rear out, after I realized that there was two set screws. The right rear bottom set screw is now scripted, and a heat gun and extractor isn't helping much. I was thinking about drilling straight through the bottom set screw with a little brute force to get it out?! Ahhhhh!! This thing is frustrating!!

I have been there. Best thing to do is use a very good drill bit that's undersized and drill it out and then you can knock out the sprocket from the axles. Good luck and don't give up.

I see you are missing me being there already Fred. Like AZ MaxIV said, you are going to have a better chance drilling it out. I would start with a very small drill bit and drill through the set screw then go bigger until you are one or two sizes down from the size of the set screw itself. Be careful not to drill into the axle, but if you do you can just us that small spot as a refrence point. Once most of the set screw is drilled out it will then be easier to get off.

Thanks bro,, and you are right,,, I was telling my wife Karen that this is a time that I would step back and let Cory go to work. I just got in a new primary clutch in for "Luther" the Hustler and I will be installing in just a few minutes, and then I will tackle "Jay" the Max IV with all that I have until he's done. Can't wait til you get home, we have a lot of wrenches to turn. Oh, and the only wedding gifts that we prefer, is parts for the machines,, lol!! See you soon bro!!

I would say don't buy any tools until at least Feb. I know that is a long time but its going to be worth it.
