Take heart....It can be done. I registered my 1980 MaxII a couple of years ago. You do not need a 16 digit VIN number. the Serial number on the build plate is sufficient, they just need to enter it. First go to the NYS DMV website. Copy all the pages about registering an ATV including the definition of an ATV. The DMV will try to tell you your Max is a side by side and does not need to be registered. You will need to have the manufacturer's specifications of your Max...weight, width etc. I used a copy of an origional brochure (you can find them on this website) This will prove it is an ATV. If you do not have proof of ownership, fake it. Make up your own receipt from Joe Schmoe saying he sold it to you "as is". Be willing to pay a healthy sales tax, it is worth it. Fake any other paperwork that may be required to meet the requirements of the DMV. Remember you really are trying to follow their rules but their system is screwed up. They really don't care as long as they see it. Most importantly, go to a DMV in a remote area. The folks in a rural DMV are more sympathetic to unique AATV registration issues. Make sure you go when they aren't swamped with people. Be VERY appreciative of their help and expertise. Have all your supporting paperwork and evidence with you, let them know you came prepared because you want to do things correctly. Be nice, be polite. Don't be afraid to go to a different DMV office if you are rejected at first. Good Luck

This one is missing the build plate,or it can't be located.I looked all over for evidence of two rivet holes where one would have been.Do you know where that plate would be located?Well at any rate with out that I believe i'd be pissing up a tree to make it legal. In NYS you need reg. and ins.to be on the ice.

Build plate should be, or was, riveted to the inside upper top next to your left leg as you are sitting in it. Something makes me think the serial number was also stamped on the frame next to the battery compartment, but I may be mistaken. Like I said before, it can be registered in NYS. It just isn't easy.

I bought my max IV from the original owner who when he bought it new in 2009 was able to register it in NY state! He said it was involved at DMV. That is one big reason I bought the Max IV 2009 from him. I was able to register it in my own name easy that way. I still keep it registered till the day I decide to sell it to the next person who can than register it than also!
