  • 1994 Max II front sprockets

Very new to the 6x6 world. And what a beastly one it is. I've got a 1994 Max 2 (got secondhand) and front drive sprockets are shot (currently no chains on those). I understand the drums and sprockets are together on the shaft and have to be replaced as a unit. Any suggestions on where to purchase since no longer made and idea on price/work involved? Also it takes quite a bit of force to turn with the levers. Does this have anything to do with front chains off or probably something much more dire? Thanks for any help.

without the front two drive axles it will be tough to steer i am sure you can call recreatives and get replacement sprocket tubes for it or another forum member probable has some lying around.

Have to ask: Are you sure the rest of your sprockets are good? If the front chains wore out the sprockets, the rears probably did the same. It might be time for a complete upgrade.

Great thoughts guys...rears are probably shot. I do know they ran the front chains loose. So recreatives said they quit making the older drum style brakes after 94 and no longer stock what I need sprocketwise. But you are saying I still should be able to get sprocket tubes that work and don't have to replace the whole combination?

Hi Guys. I went through this several months ago. I think you have 3 options:

          1. You can purchase new sprockets from Recreatives, which work for disc brakes. Then you need to take them to a machine shop and have them weld on pieces of pipe to make the drum. This should not be a big deal, but it is still a hassle.
          2. Just used the sprockets from Recreatives as is and hope you do not need to use the brakes. I do not recommend this since I had my trani pop out of gear once time and I lost all control of the machine and had to use the brakes... Still it is an option if you are adventurous..
          3. Find a used set from a member. This is what I was lucky enough to do. The board is full of great people (especially Thebuggyman), who hopefully can help...

          Good luck!

I'm taking option 4 right now. I bought some tube and sprockets and I'm making new ones. While I'm at it, I'm converting to disc brakes. I got the rotors and calipers from a go cart place. I'll need to bore out the hub on the rotors and make a new mount for the calipers.

You can get the sprockets from Surplus Center for about $15 each.
