  • Hustler resto help wanted

I've got this old Hustler torn apart so I can have it ready for the spring. I've been trying to search the forums for ideas on upgrades, but every time I use the search function, it just asked me to log in. I assume it's something wrong with my phone. Just wondering what I should do while I have it all torn down. I remember once reading about a more solid mount for the t20 transmission. I also plan on upgrading the chain tensioners. I found some spring loaded ones, and I'm curious if anyone as ever used them. What else to buy a engine covering back seat if anyone has one.

Regarding the spring loaded chain tensioners, I've tried these on a Super Swamp Fox and a Hustler 980. I found that they did not perform well at all. I switched back to standard fixed tensioners after experiencing the problems. Those spring loaded tensioners work well for applications where the chain only goes in one direction such as a motorcycle or conveyor system. However our machines use chains that go forward and reverse. I found that when backing the tensioners would go flat and there would be minimal tension on the chains and therefore minimal power transmitted. I learned a lot about dynamic chain tension and the problems with chains that can go both directions. I thought about using both a spring loaded tensioner and a manual tensioner working together on a hard to adjust chain like in the front but decided not to go that route as there wasn't enough room in the chain well and every time you add complication, that's just another area prone to fail. Hope this helps with your decision.
