Hi i live in arkansas right outside of memphis tn and and have just bought an ltv kid although it is not running yet. Ive ridn 4-wheelers around to duck hunt and train dogs now that i have found a couple of swamps sloughs and fields to hunt that i am the one leading hunts i needed a atv but i found the kid for 900$. So i looked into it witch was not easy and in the process i found this site and info on the kid saying it is way better than the 4wheelers and alot of the other 6x6s and 8x8s now i am eager to get it running and see what it can really do!!!! I would be interested in having rides but as duck season is almost finally here my weekend are full for awhile
8x8 twice as good as 4x4

    • Saying Hello to all

I hope I'm in the right spot. I have been visiting frequently, lots of great info. I'm up here in Northern Ontario Canada. Got my first 6x6 when I was about 14 it was a Jiger. Since then have had three Gip-sea's , one Amphicat and recently I aquired an Attex Thunderchief. I still have the original Gip-sea which I built back in 1971. The attex project just started about a month ago and is going well. I will take some pictures of the machines soon and post them. Thanks JIM

                    Hello twinke,
Looks like its in not to bad of shape. Someone cut up the rear engine area though. Does it have springs in the axles? They did that I guess in the earlier years as a slipper clutch. Also what I understand they had sticks too only in the earlier years but did find one with sticks the ower stated look original and not swapped but he said it was a newer one. Not really sure of any other ID marks for IDing the year though. If you look under the dash on the steering cylinders, the right one should have a model number and maybe serial too that would help get an idea of approx age maybe.

                        • Howdy

Just purchased KID 8x8 Diesel. Am going to do a frame off restoration and will post my picts as it goes. Spoke with Bob Short at Shoson Industries and he said the KID is getting pretty rare. Only 100 produced and 25 went to Southeast Asia. Last production was 1971. Built by LTV and very impressive overkill in the engine/drivetrain. This thing is really an ugly duckling, but runs like new. Can't wait to start rock crawling in Colorado.

                          • Hi

Where to start....... What a Forum, Amazing. The amount of solid accurate reliable information is impressive, all the more impressive that the woes I am currently experianciancing with my Argo rebuild have all been beaten on here by you guys.

I am based in Scotland, that's the small country with England hanging off the bottom, and was finding it a bit of a struggle hauling deer off the hill using my quad, even with 4 wheel drive and diff lock I am getting too old to jump off and gun the throttle to get through a soft bit.

I got a hold of my Argo 8x8 with Tecumesh 16hp engine late last year as a non runner with 7 wheels and 7 cracked Runamuks, at least 6 loose bearings (later turned out to be 16!) a broken handle bar and a big tear accross the front lower tub. Having just re-read that part I wonder why I took it !

A full strip down in May of this year had me making a list of "Good points" and "Bad points". Fortunately the "Good" list was slightly longer than the "Bad" list.

To date I have had to weld and straighten the Chassis, weld a new handle bar, strip and clean chains sprockets and bearing carriers. I had to have 3 new mid shafts made as the hydraulic puller I borrowed from work showed 215 bar on the gauge just before the puller started to slip. I was lucky I managed to release the pressure before before anything shot off. Had to cut the shafts to remove them from the tub!.

This week I started the rebuild. I printed off and laminated the 60+ pictures I took during stripdown and still couldn't work out which sprocket went where. Thanks to this site, I found a PDF file in Russia of all places that answered all my sprocket questions. Also thanks to this site I found that the last owner had misfitted the bearing carriers having placed a carrier on each side of the chassis as opposed to both on the same side as the bearing. I have repaired the split with a large piece of 10mm thick recycled plastic board and a lot of countersunk bolts.
Everthing has went pretty well except that I now find that I cannot get the short drive shafts mounted as the bolts needed to go in before I dropped the Chassis in

Thats enough rambling, with luck and lots of big mugs of Tea I hope to get it running and up on the hill early next year.

Thanks again for all the information.
