  • thinking of buying an attex st400

Hello all, Ive been reading the forum for awhile now.
I have the chance to buy an attex st400 with tracks for $1000.
Is this a fair price for the machine? and is it a capable off road atv?
    Thanks,
    John

    • Hi John, welcome to the site. It's hard to say what an ATV is worth without knowing more about it. Try starting a new thread in the Attex forum outside of this introduction thread and give us some more information from year to engine to tires, what shape is the body in, etc. The more info you can give us the better.

          • Old New Used Argo

I owned a 1980 Argo which got me in & out of very demanding situations duck hunting in the brackish marshes of the eastern shore of MD . It was very loud did not start dependably, it also required a good deal of maintaince.

I now could use a Aatv in my current duck club

I joined 6x6 to educate myself with the help of other more experienced members on whether Argo have improved the quality over the years & whether I should consider used vs new. The new $ seem very steep to me

Looking forward to participating in the varios forums

                  • Planning to become a 6x6 owner in a couple of weeks. A friend (who is paralyzed from the waist down, tractor accident) has a Argo Vanguard2 that he wants to trade for my utv. Always wanted an Argo, just never got around to it.

                      • Hello all. I am new as well. I picked up a MAX II (not sure of the year but it has a serial number of ~10,000 so I am guessing mid 90’s) with the 18 HP Vanguard engine. I could use some help on figuring out what to buy to perform a "tune up". So far I have seen people talk about 10 different types of spark plugs, 5 different type of chain oil and the GM Limited Slip Axle Lubricant additive. The problem I am having is finding the stuff at the store. People have talked about using some kind of grease that you can paint on to the chains. I have been to Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, and Autozone and they look at me like I am an alien when I ask for some kind of grease that will stay on an ATV chain. So far the best I have found is some motorcycle chain spray but I really want something that I can paint on (I know the wax stuff if bad). For the GM Limited slip axle lubricant I think the GM part number is 1052358 but I have seen several other part numbers as well. So in summary if there is already a post out there with a list of materials (ideally with part numbers) that I can order on-line to change the spark plugs, transmission fluid (with additive), and lube the chains I would appreciate it someone pointing me in the right direction. I have never really worked on any kind of vehicle or small engine so I have a huge learning curve ahead of me so I am happy to be here. Prepare for lots of silly questions!

                        • Hi Stan and Madpuppy, welcome to the site. Madpuppy, three of the NAPA stores near me stock the GM limited slip additive so you might want to try that if there is one near you. Most of the posts on the site regarding chain lube will point you to PJ Black Label but I typically just pick up chain lube from my local autoparts store since it's convenient. Lately I've been getting the liquid wrench. For spark plugs and other engine parts, you can go to a small engine shop near you.

                          • Thanks.

For the PJ black lablel I am I found this (PJ1 Lubricants 1-06A - PJ-1 Black Label Chain Lube - Overview - SummitRacing.com) which is an aerosol. Do most people use an aerosol for lubricating the chains or is there something more thick that I can paint on with a paint brush or apply with a rag? I found a can of high temperature grease at a motorsports shop but I just want to make sure I am applying the right stuff.

Another question I had was the manual on this web site calls for type "F" transimission fluid with the GM Limited slip additive. The manual that came with my MAX II calls for Dexron II fluid and so does the lablel on the Skid Steer transmisssion. Should I use Dexron III fluid (that is the lowest number I could find) and then add the GM Limited Slip Additive or should I go with type "F" and put in the additive?

                            Thanks again!

                            • [QUOTE=Rock Doctor ]I use Milcot 220 on my chains, I believe it's a ESSO product. I get it in 5gal pails. It's common in industrial applications, and works very well. Most of the Argo owners that I know use it. I use a paintbrush to apply it, it will not sling off the chains, and it will not wash off either

                              • Hey my names Kris. I found this site after buying my first 6x6 a 72 Attex. I got it knowing that it had transmission problems but what I didn't know was that no one wants to work on it. I live in central Illinois and have been to transmission shops, implement dealers and a bobcat dealer but as soon as I tell them what I have they say that they can't get parts. I was wondering if anyone knew where I might be able to send it, where to get parts if I decide to try it myself or where to get a used transmissioin. Any help would be appreciated.
