    building an attex for racing....... bought used brog warner out of a maxx .....building new axels would like to know how many teeth on sprocket I should use (#50 chain)? Plan on running a 340 engine...what is it going to do to the bottem end at top speed?

    Any help would be appreciated.....

    Stock was 22 middle/front and 26 middle/back on mine. I'm going with a 23 for the middle/back tho. Little more speed and the smaller diameter will keep it off the bottom of the tub. That 26 tooth didn't leave too much clearance.

        15 is stock on mine. Was considering doing something different there but getting a bigger sprocket made for the t-20 shaft was expensive.

          I think just about every T-20 used 15 teeth on the output sprocket. Boosting it up a tooth or two may give you more speed, but you'll lose bottom end grunt, and perhaps put more undue stress on the output shafts. There are not a lot of trial and error research projects that have been done in that area.

          What sort of racing are you looking into? Going around lots of turns and having to slow down for each of them makes a really fast top-end a bit futile. I took my Attex center sprockets up to 26 teeth sprockets one year (from 22 teeth) and it hurt the machine a LOT. I'm running a 52hp engine, and it turned it into a giant slug in the turns. I went back down to 22 teeth, and it's night and day different. I have decent acceleration, and it accelrates out of corners fairly well with the stock gearing. Top speed is in the neighborhood of 45-50mph if I don't try to turn the engine into a molten pile of goo. On the Ashtabula track, I can't come close to that speed, even on the straightaway.

          I have a 440 JLO powered Superchief that runs the same stock gearing as Jerbear's machine. Top speed is about 5mph less, but the engine is a bit less powerful. My girlfriend races a G50B-powered Attex, also with stock gearing. It's equally as quick, and quite good in the turns. I think that the stock gearing is an excellent place to start, but feel free to experiment. Don't make huge changes in gearing. Small steps are the key; I wouldn't go over a two-tooth sprocket jump if you feel the need to make changes.

            Just a thought based on the way you worded this question... do you have 4 or 6 chains total? on a 6 chain there is one from the trans to the center axle, then one from center to front and another from center to rear. 4 chain models connect the center axle, rear axle and t-20 with one chain, then have a second chain from the center to the front.

                Hey, Ranger;

                You'll need about 25 feet. I usually buy it on a 50 ft roll for two machines. If you buy the ten ft packs you end up with double master links in one chain.
