Argo Avenger shifter spins around (rotates)

I have a 2004 and 2008 Argo avenger and both have the shifter shaft freely rotate so therefore the knob is all over the place pointing in differient directions. I have not diassembled it but was wondering if maybe it was related to the o-ring under there?
Anybody have any experience with this?

Every Argo I owned with the old style transmission had the same issue. I also observed this on Lee's machine. I never could figure out what was causing the rotation, finally I just accepted it and worried about the real mechanical issues.

The shift lever is a round stair with no detent to stop from turning. When in doubt turn knob so lettering is correct.
