Mudd-Ox is still a site sponsor. Just like any member that chooses to help sponsor the site, the sponsorships expire automatically. When that happens, the member's status is reverted automatically back to a standard user and all sponsorship information disappears. It's just like if you were to choose to sponsor the site in your membership control panel, you would choose how long you want to help support the site. You would be shown as a sponsor and your username would change color. Once the end of that time arrives, your status goes back to default.
The only difference with a commercial sponsor is that the code on the front page of the site gets messed up and has to be manually reset.
