What are the benefits of a CVT driven hydraulic pump. With a direct drive pump
the speed is variable thru the controls, trying to grasp the benefit of a variable
speed driven pump.
Thanks, Jim

hi
The idea of a cvt driven pump which leads to a motor does not make sense . The idea behind having hydraulics is to remove the cvt altogether . The pump should receive its drive from the engine and should be variable output .

Actually it does make sense up to a about 40 hp especially to gain some reasonable travel speed out of the unit. I believe Matt was doing this on his earlier units

I've got to agree with Tomo, the CVT would parasite the power flow of a direct connect hydraulic pump and would effect the flow. Not saying it wouldn't still work but it seems it would add unnecessary complication to a device that does not need it. A direct drive for a machine is always preferable over multiple power robbing devices attached.
hi ,
u learn a new things everyday !!!!
If the engine is powerfull enough hydraulics will give speed and torque [this requires the pump and motors to be matched by an engineer also ]
I agree with Noel on this one ..
After the pump it then feeds each [2x] motor for ,LH and RH chain axle assemblies
This situation will give u some fine tuning in regards to axle to hydro pump gear ratio

all of the Mudd-Ox through 2009 were in fact CVT clutch driven machines. The demise of comet clutches accelerated the change to direct drive pumps. Also the introduction of the diesel Mudd-Ox was well suited to direct drive. The latest Ox's have a larger pump and higher capacity hydraulic motors for more speed and torque. Quite a significant increase in performance.

Yes the CV clutch assembly mated to the hydraulic system of the early Mudd-Ox was quite clever of Matt. If the hydraulics pulled the motor down it would not stall or die and at WOT it turned the pump at 4000RPM when the engine was turning 3600. Only reason he stopped using it was Comet went BU and his last order with them never got shipped forcing him to go direct drive. Now he uses an over sized charge pump I believe and the bigger diesel engines most of the time. The early Hybrid style are still make a lower powered machine easy to drive.

Anyone have a Part number for the new CVT Clutch that Mudd ox is using?

You will probably have to ask Matt about the clutch. Hydraulic powering an AATV or any other vehicle has to engineered and if you have performed the calculation you will find that its not very efficient, so low HP drives act like skid steer lawn mowers. To increase the performance you add a CVT and oversize the pumps. The CVT also has the added advantage of uncoupling the pump for easier engine starting. This is not a log splitter so pump inertia starting torque is significant.
