Questions about possible Max II Purchase

Hi, I am new to this as a member, but not to the site. I am looking to buy a Max II that I have found from at least the plate on the dash area to be made n March of 1980. The Max is in Pretty Good shape with many new or recently rebuilt parts. The OH160 Tecumseh engine was rebuilt two years ago and it has a list of other parts.....

"It had 4 new updated solid axles installed. All six axle bearings and seals, new chains and chain guides. The brake bands on the front axle look like new. It starts and runs and IDLES great. The charging system puts out 10-15 amps...."

My question is this... Having not being able to see the Max, does it seem reasonable to pay $1700-$1900 for an AATV that is potentially 30+ years old? Another question, Is there any other place that I can look while inspecting it to see if the number on the dash matches others on the maching, to see if it is the original body or possibly just an older body swapped on?

    Thanks For The Help!!

The engine and year sounds right. The tranny should have a serial number on it too and you cab call ri and verify the year as well unless someone swapped trannys at some point they should be able to verify the year of that too. As for the price issue, that's really up to you. The asking price does not seem out of line to me and a few hundred off would seem like a pretty good deal. Could you find a better deal, sure, but there seems to always be a better deal out there somewhere.

Just check under the tub. Look and see if it has had the SNOT beat out of it. IF it has a TON of gouges, you may want to shy away. It is possible for older AATVS to wear thin on the older tubs, and that is bad news bears. You would want to use UHMW to line the bottom of it. good luck and keep us posted!

Where are you from Beave? Often another local member is happy to help you out.
Older machines did not have serial #'s on the trans, and newer machines the trans # does not match the body#.......I have no idea why.
Basicly the exact year does not matter.....with the tecumseh, they were all the same till about 1990 when they switch to the briggs v-twin.
The price sounds reasonable if it's in good shape. Check the body over, and the tires. Tires are often overlooked, but the price of six new ones is significant.
Why can't you see the max? If it is a long drive for you, just remember that opinions vary. Two people can look at the same machine and have two very different views.
New bodies can be purchased, but it's a lot of work, and can be expensive......I have a nice 2004 green top, and a new uncut bottom if you are close by me.

Well, I bought it. It is in pretty good shape. It needs a few things... the exhaust needs a new flex pipe and a seal where it goes through the body, a couple new drain plugs, one of the middle axles are pretty loose and causes the chain to bind occasionally. The tires are pretty good though. It runs good too. Only goes about 10 mph though. Does that seem right? I thought they were a little faster than that... I live in southeastern Ohio.

Ohh... it needs seats too, I Don't know how I could have ever forgotten that! Haha

Glad to hear you ended up buying the Max! First off, they do go faster than 10MPH......more like 20-25MPH. The cause of this could be a worn belt, a loose belt, or the drive and or driven clutches need to be serviced and/or lubed. Start by checking how much tension is on the belt. My guess is that it's way too loose and the motor needs to be adjusted back.

Next, if your middle axle so loose that it's derailing the chain you need to replace the bearings. Call Buffalo Bearings at (716) 874-1720, tell them you're on 6X6World, and they'll take good care of you. Many 6X6World members go through them for the lowest priced bearings and the best service. Keep us updated and let us know how everything works out for you.
