Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

Wow!!! It looks great. It's nice to see someone updating an older machine.

                    • Hi there 1982 Argo,
I have a similiar machine to yours and am in the process of putting in a new vanguard to replace the Tecumseh I destroyed. Did you have to cut out the upper hull where the front valve cover goes? it appears that way in your photos.
Great looking camo job you have done there and a great looking older machine. Lots of snow too! !
                      Cheers Al

                      • thanks for all the great comments guys, my wife thinks i'm crazy for spending time and money on the old beast, i'm sure some of you can relate to that. Eightwheeler the camo job was real easy to do, its just a kit i bought from cabela's. It is made by a company called Camo Clad and comes in sheets that you just cut and then stick. I bought the kit big enough to cover a 14" jon boat and i had plenty left over. I wasn't really sure when i bought if it would work or not but i had to try, it's been on now for over 6 months and no trouble at all. great product.
Swamper the motor switch was a bit tricky. my old motor was the 16 hp tech and was quite a bit smaller than the 18 hp briggs. I did have to cut about 3/4 " off the front to get it to fit unless you want to alter the motor support . you may be able to get yours to fit but make sure you have enough play left to adjust your idler chains thats why i had to cut mine. I also had trouble with the oil filter on the vanguard hitting my brake disc. I had to order a special kit to relocate the oil filter. those were the only problems i had. I hope yours fits with no mods.

                        • Free on side of road

I found this piece on the side of road for free. Guy said he had no time to fix it. Needs an engine, I got a 440 Rotax Air-cooled with a primary clutch on it, in running condition for $100. It needs some fibreglass work, I will not float now for very long

                          • a few pics

in the process of doing an engine swap, found that now would be an easy time to do all the chains as well. iposted some pics in the gallery if you want to check tem out. not sure as to how to link them here. it is a 1983 8x8 argo. had a single cylnder 18 hp tech. in it, now has a 20hp v-twin from princess auto. all new chains, now comes the seats, wiring, and the fuel hoses. then i will be able to put the top back on.

                            • Great, now I'm addicted. After picking up the Orange one last week a deal for this Response came along to good to pass up. 18 horse Briggs, winch and it's like new. Well worth the 13 hours round trip through the Michigan North to get it. Can anyone tell me what the poles attached to each side are for?

Hi J Lemon, I love to hear about new addicts. I think you got a winner there. The short pipes with the rubber caps line up with the edge of the windshield when its folded down. I see that your machine doesn't have a windshield but the P.O. must have had plans? In the meantime I got a chuckle out of it.
