  • Update on the Sears Progress!!

Sorry I changed jobs so I have been out over the last 2 months, but here is where I am at, just got a little fine tuning to do and once I get everything how I like it I will seal up the 2 halves and head for the water. I was wondering if anyone else has a delay in the driven clutch opening up?? It seems like I have the motor rapped out and I am hardley moving, but after a long open way it starts to speed up, not sure if this is normal. But you all like how it is looking.

Wow! I think it looks great!

There are different springs for different engines. It could be that your driven clutch is set up for a 2-stroke. I see you have a new Kohler in the machine. Did it originally come with a 2-stroke engine? You can pick up the right spring from RI and swap it out.

I'm doing that very thing at Ledges this year.

    Good luck.

Wow, that is turning out nice. Great work.

I am using a comet 40 on my 16hp honda clone and it use to do the same thing. Then I reworked my thottle and it revs more and it seems to "shift" better. Might be a thing to check and make sure the throttle is opening up all the way.

        Looks great though

You did a really great job. That's one good-looking Sportster. You may have to tinker with the spring & weights in the drive clutch or the spring tension in the driven clutch to get it to change at the proper speed. That looks like a Comet Duster on the engine, and they're real easy to tinker with.

Damn that is a nice machine.

What is the engagement RPM to get you moving? IF its too high , some heavier weights or more weights will bring the engagement RPM down. The heavier weight will also give the engine clutch more authority over the driven.

There was a few spots of cosmetic cracks on the top hull and the nose was broke out, I did a little glass work there but other than that it was is good shape. Before I painted it I made sure that all the little pin holes were filled so I could get a good smooth finish.

I have the standard 6 weights and a pink spring that comes with the comet duster, you can put up to 9 weights in them. As for speed, I have to hold it at about 3700 rpm for a long open stretch to get it finally moving. I replaced the shoe ramps and a new green spring from RI on the driven.

Do you need to rev the engine to get it to move or does it start moving with low engine RPM?

It sounds like the green spring is too much for the weight of your machine or the engine clutch does not have enough pressure to overcome the driven unit. I would try some more weight on the engine and see how she does. At least it should make a difference and its easier to get to than the T-20 side.

My unit moves at a low idle, I will call comet and get some more weights, i can also unwind the driven spring a little to also help.
