Running Conquest in the Winter (snow) w/o pre-cleaner.

My Conquest is my primary winter back country transport. I operate it at altitudes exceeding 10,000 in deep snow.

It is jetted and clutched for high atlitude and maximum "grunt". It also has the Low "GU" tranny. It does quite well, but I am wondering if I ran it w/o the foam pre-cleaner on the air filter, if it would help it breath, which should in turn lean it out further and produce more power. In theory anyway.

My thoughts are that in "snow only" conditions at altitude the air should be relatively clean (no dust/dirt) and the paper filter should be able to protect the machine. I would probably replace the paper filter yearly if I did this.

What say you argo dudes???

What is your reasoning behind not using them? And I am guessing you have experienced no ill effects.?

Nothing I can prove, lol. I just don't think they are needed. I don't spend much time in dusty areas..
I just decided one hot day that my machine was running better without it, so since then Iv'e never used them.

As another data point, my snowblower doesn't even have an air filter. If you've got snow, you're just not going to have a whole lot of dust flying around.

It is coming off then. It just seems like it would really be restricting a lot of air from getting into the machine to breath. Hell, if you have not had any problems in the soup and goop you run in (I know not much dust), I feel pretty safe running in the snow w/o one.

Good point. I have a beast of a snowblower and I never thought about it not having one.

When you say pre fister are you talking about the round cylinder air filter part 2508301 (avenger 2004)? I almost never go in durt. Always in woods, no sand , no dust

The 175hp Merc in my Jetboat has no air cleaner either.
Brebett, I'm referring to the outer foam filter that rides outside the primary filter.
