    Restoring the T-20 Transmission

    Well I sat down and started taking apart the T-20 today. Wow was it ever fun If anyone has a tool that removes the inner output shaft snap ring, please let me know. It is not easy to remove (as Mike says in his article) but I managed using some snap ring pliers. I am including a couple of pictures so I can get some opinions on the two bands from the right case. I haven't broken down the left half yet...probably tomorrow. Anyway my guess from the looks of the 2 bands is that the bad one is obvious and will need to be replaced Without seeing the other two yet I am betting they will look the same.

    it looks like the lining delaminated from the one band, but the other looks really good. from what i can see it doesn't look like the ends of the bands are twisted up.
    the snap ring you mentioned just sucks. i use snap ring pliers to open the ring up, then get a 90 degree pick wedged between the output shaft and the snap ring. then use the pick to pull the ring up out of it's grove

    Hey that's a great idea. I have some stainless steel dental picks I use to clean the crud out of my rifles. If I can get the snap ring out a little then like you said I could grab it with the pick and yank I also noticed that my plungers on the bottom of the case have 2 o-rings and the ones on the top have just 1. Is that standard? I guess it would make sense because the oil is going to mainly sit on the bottom...Thanks for the tip!

    You can purchase plungers with two o-ring for the top bands while you are in there. I believe that is standard on all newer model T20's.

    I'm not sure that the doubles are needed on the top (wonder where this transmission comes from: I've done an awful lot with douple orings on the bottom plungers only) If the thing's together right, it doesn't seem to me that it would ever be necessary to have the extra seal on the top.

    I've had these Snap-on pliers for years- used to do truck transmission a long, long time ago. They work well for the eyeless snap rings retaining the drive spools. You can always save the next guy some work and replace the rings with standard eyed snap rings when you put it back together. I'm sure there's a reason that they used the type they did, but I've never had one of the others come apart and they make life lots easier.
