New build - A Max four my kids

Earlier this year I acquired a 1989 Max IV in pretty decent shape for $1,500. I plan on completely ‘restoring’ this machine back to perfect running and driving order so that I can introduce my twins to the wonderful world of 6x6?s. I was a pretty active member of this forum during its hay day (before it changed hands and lost popularity as the hobby faded) and wish to get back to being active on it. I’ll be posting pics of my build on here and welcome any thoughts/comments anyone has!

So far, I have the engine removed from it and plan on having the frame blasted and primed so I can paint it. I will be completely redoing the T-20 (my first T-20 rebuild) and replacing the old, leaky Kohler Magnum with a new Kohler Command. Other than that, replacing what is needed, such as the gas tank, will be all else I plan on doing with it.

Glad to hear that others are still doing this. As most know I've been running a 6x6 of my own for about 14 years. Before that I briefly worked with a power company that used 6x6 and 8x8's for checking power lines between and around the Mountains of West Virginia. That's where I got the 6x6 bug.

Trying to finish a "Frame-Out" rebuild myself. Replaced all the inner and outer bearings, two sprockets, one axle, all chains, 4 idle bearings, and rewelded the seats. Seems I wasn't taking a good a care as I thought. Anyway, still putting it back together and fixing or adding and tweaking some stuff (rewiring, new lights on rollbar, boxes inside the seats, maybe a new amplifier and speakers). Last time I was at Busco Beach I broke a transmission band so had to rebuild anyway and decided that one of my upgrades was moving the battery from under the rear seat to the motor mount. Since I have a few months till Busco Beach (where I will break it again), I might even put in a new motor (any suggestions?).

Without this site I don't know how I would have kept it running and fixed. Thanks guys.

I would add the frame brace kit for the transmission area. Also turn top rail of frame down about 3/8” right in line with driven clutch. You will be surprised at how much easier the belt goes on. I may have a frame brace kit left. I had a bunch made up when RI went away. I haven’t asked if parts are available yet as I’m not sure the 4 frame is in production quite yet. I’ll look for one and let you know if I have anything but drawings. Have fun.
