Hey all!
I'm new to this forum and the 6x6 world in general but I was lucky enough to pick up a 1979 Prairie Bobcat with fiberglass body a few months ago. when I picked it up the seller told me it hasn't run in 20 years and had a seized engine from sitting. We made a deal and I'm now rebuilding it from the ground up. I have been having a hard time finding any answer on the internet to my questions so I'm hoping maybe some of you can advise me. the engine was not able to be saved as it looks like it sat in water for 20 years. I ended up rebuilding a 377 twin to mount up. All went good and I got everything that came with the original machine torn down and rebuilt including the seized gear box.
The last hurdle I now have and wasn't expecting is when the machine is in forwards and the chains are driving all the wheels turn as they should. when i pull the left side lever back the left side wheels lock up while the right side wheels keep going. so turning left is no issue at all but when I pull the right hand lever when the wheels are turning, both sides (left and right) lock up completely and nothing moves. the left wheel should keep turning when the right lever is pulled causing the machine to turn right. I have no idea how the main drive shaft off the gear both is supposed to spin. I'm guessing either the drums that break press against are suppose to have one side freewheel or the shaft itself has a seized component? I have included some pictures so any help would be much much appreciated.
