    TA440A Help?

    Greetings All,
New to the forum but, I have a Big Max II, Serial number #7480, powered by a Kawasaki TA440A-F202 displacing 436CC. It has an older Salsbury 910 drive clutch that is worn out (indicated by the belt not traveling up near the top of the clutch when fully engaged).
I was thinking of swapping for a new clutch and seen somewhere where someone suggested a Comet 102C.
My desire is to have a quick fast moving machine for a short period of time traveling no more than 300 feet. I know this sounds odd but I use the machine as part of a comedy act at professional rodeos.
    My questions are:
    1. Will I have any clearance issues (to the tub) with the 102c?
    2. What color spring is best?
    3. What cams would you suggest?
Any suggestions in regards to a new drive clutch are greatly appreciated.

I think they use a silver spring, but not sure on the cams. I'll look when I get home and see if I have any information on the Kohler. I've seen 102Cs in Max IIs but I'm not sure if the swap requires reforming the body.

You need the F2 cams and the White 203474A spring. If you want a more aggressive hole shot, you may want to install one or two RPM shims and the engagement will rise by a few hundred RPM. .

Awesome info Don, thanks a bunch! I'm not real familiar with the "RPM shims". Could you be more specific about what they are and where they need to be installed? The average rodeo arena is 50' x 300' so getting a great hole shot is important.

I have no problem remolding the tub if need be. I have been trying to research the web to find a descriptive diagram showing the height and width of the 102C to see if I will have any clearance problems.

I picked up a Red spring for the driven clutch, as suggested on many of the posts I've reviewed so I'm set there. I don't quite understand the different colored springs for the assorted drive clutches yet though. Time to learn more.
    Appreciate your help....saty safe!

The shims are just spacer to give the spring a little more tension, and give the clutch a higher engagement RPM- they look like a machine bushing and go on either end of the spring. I'll see if I can find you a part number for them.

You may want to try the original spring in the secondary clutch before you change it out with the red one. Everyone I know that uses the red spring is running a four-stroke engine and want more low end power, usually sacrificing some top end. If the secondary is stock on yours, it will have a spring in it more suited to the Kawasaki. If you're not satisfied with it, you can always change it later.

Understood. I got some time to test, thanks to COVID, so I will take your recommended approach. Sure appreciate your help my friend, I will let you know how things turn out.
I saw where some guys were talking about taking the T20 out to get the clutch off. I did not have that problem, it was not seized, and just took a small pry bar to get her started then pushed the chain out of the way. Got the 910 off fine with the air impact, rubbed the shaft down with some emry cloth and put some anti seize on it, on the T20 as well. Just waiting for the new Comet 102C to come in. There's a place in MN that has them (Comet 102C) in stock with the appropriate cams and springs..."Pat's Small Engine Plus" EAST BETHEL MN 55011, Parts/Service : 763-413-1344.

    Thanks again Amigo!
