I would take a wire wheel and shine each drum, making sure to remove any rust or rough spots. Replace thrust washers, seals and bearings as needed and put it back together. As I said, my transmission drums are in worse shape than yours and they run fine. I run Castrol CVT transmission fluid and have no band chatter at all. While you have it apart, thoroughly inspect your bearings, sprockets and chain.

By the way, when you do put the trans back together, there are two subtle details you don't want to miss.
First, insert the bands into the casing and push the plunger through the case from inside out. Then put the oring on the plunger and push it back into the casing. Install a bolt to keep the plunger from slipping back into the casing such that the oring becomes exposed. Second, the plate that sandwiches between the two drums and interlocks with the three planetary gear stubs - the center teeth )(either 9 or 18 depending on model) have a bevel. The bevel needs to face toward the output shaft. It eases the shifting process. If you get it backwards shifting will be more difficult than it already is.

Awesome thanks! I saw the video from maxrules99 about the rebuild on the t20 and saw those points but thanks for reminding me. I hope it’s just chatter, I’m going to take a green scrub pad to the bands and maybe some sandpaper to the drums like I saw someone else on here do. I’ll take a wire wheel to them too. I have one on my Grindr. Will it not create grooves in it? I also ordered some anti slip . Based on your guys advice I won’t send them to get relined, just clean everything up again. I’m going to pull the chains off everything and soak the funk off them and re lube. New throttle, 22hp predator engine and red spring. Hope it all comes together. I can’t seem to figure out how to pull the clutch off for the red spring though. The bolt on the end won’t budge

Those drums should be refinished on a lathe. You may not have to remove much material. The surface needs to be smooth and dull. Bands should be cleaned to take shine off with green scotch bright pad. I test for band chatter by holding on a small hill and letting it just creep forward If it groans or shudders before stopping it is bands. Measure the metal backing and then the lining. If any of the lining is less than .015” have them reclined or purchase new bands. Tha red bands require posi trak additive to keep band chatter to a minimum. Check the case bushing play on ring ear drum. Over .010” of play can cause band noise also.

This is a set of refinished drums. Turned at 200 rpm. 40 grit paper to get rust ect off and finished with 80 grit. They were not cut down any. If they are shinny enough to see yourself they won’t grab good.

Msafi65, I don’t have a lathe, can I just manually sand them? Or rig em up with something like a hammer drill to spin it? Also where can I find posi track additive

Could it have just been a band adjustment issue from your description?

If the bands are too tight, then there's a position when both bands will lock, and brake the motor - a band situation. It would probably cause the clutch to do weird stuff.

The bands should be adjusted so that one releases before the other one grips, or to use a different term, break before make.

Easy enough to check, just turn the clutch input while moving the sticks and while in neutral. If it sticks at all while moving one stick slowly, then it would be a band adjustment problem.

Though I should qualify, I'm pretty new to this, but it seems like it would be possible to set it so that both bands would engage at the same time, and this would only occur midway through a stick transition.

                David.
