I found with my new 23 hp engine that it doesn't start right away. It takes alot to get it started but once started during the day it starts mostly the rest of the day real easy. After speaking with a mechanic he had me pull the gas line off of the engine and turn it over. NO gas coming out within the first 30 seconds. He said that I should put in a electric fuel pump. Does anybody else out there run an electric fuel pump on their engine?

With a fuel tank located above the motor the fuel will gravity feed to the motor mounted pump. If your fuel tank is below the motor, or specifically the fuel pump, the mechanical pump doesn't suck so well. MaxIV's with the motor mounted up high fall into this category.....as do Argo's with the tank under the driver seat.
An electric pump mounted low will help. The reason for the hard starts is the fuel in the carb float bowl tends to evaporate from residual engine heat...and time. Using your choke even in the warm weather should help it start better.
With the choke on full it doesn't like to start. I have to hold full throttle and let it turn over until it starts (without choke). It then starts and runs great. If I install a Electric Fuel Pump won't there need to be a regulator installed also. I don't want to much pressure going to the carb. With an electric fuel pump I'm guessing I only need 2.5 to 3# pressure at the carb?
Why not put on one of those bulb pump things like those on outboard tanks? Give it a few squeezes and fire her right on up. Seems like I read on here somewhere that only 1 PSI was needed at the carb.

Hey 5 cents is a start!!!! Got my bulb pump at Wally World (only place that had them) and put it on with all new fuel lines. Gave it a squeeze or two (it got tight just like on an outboard) and she fired right on up. Oh yeah, the pump was around $20. Will send your nickel back to help.Originally Posted by wheeler

I had a bulb pump on my tank trainer with fuel on front and motor on back the line was long. It worked good with the bulb. Hope it works for you too.
another point I thought of, if your engine mount fuel pump goes out the back seat rider can pump the bulb and get you in. He (or she) may not go riding with you again but it beats a long walk.
