We have a Avenger HDI and are considering building a roll cage for it. I have read many threads here, lots of opinions both for and against a roll bar, most against, site the added height going through the bush, and had pretty much decided to leave it without. A trip up a beaver dam has me re-thinking that, after a couple of attempts at climbing the shallow side, it was apparent that there was no way it was going the easy way (you know they sometimes go where they want to, and an uneven hole underwater made the machine always slide to the steep side) and as we reached the top it was only one guy throwing his weight forward over the hood that kept us from flopping over backwards, well maybe we wouldn't have flipped, no way to know for certain, but i still picture us sitting there like stooges while the argo landed on us, 30 wet miles from the road, and another 150 to a hospital.... so, back to the roll cage planning. I have been thinking about a folding roll cage, like a wakeboard tower, you would pull out two pins, and the cage would fold back for low headroom situations, and then fold back up for protection. Not worried about strength, it will be plenty strong enough to withstand a slow speed rollover, (not like a Nascar end over end). Have the tools and the skills required, and enough farm boy ingenuity (fix it or walk home and listen to your dad question why you never fixed it yourself in the first place) to make it happen. I don't have a tower on my boat, but I have looked at buying one before, and have had a good close look at them. They (not all) fold so the boat can fit into a garage, or under a low bridge, pretty simple, the mounts have pivots, and one (on each side) of the braces is a tube within a tube, or just a removable brace. Doesn't have to fold flat, just even half it's height.
So has anyone built such a thing? I would like to see photos if you have, or discussion of the merits of the idea?
