Briggs Engine Type

I have searched and I thought some time ago I found the answers but can't seem to find it again.

Anyway, has anyone ever decoded the Briggs engine type codes? I have an engine that is

350447-1396-E1

I know what the 350447 is, but not the 1396-E1.

I doubt it is simply paint and decals as many other sites suggest - because, according to the Briggs web site, the model 350477 seems to have several carb variations (different part numbers).

Well I found partial info for 10 or so versions of the 18H.P.. I would have like a nice chart but.....
For the 1396-E1 Type I found refers to the following:
Crank part #
Governor type
Controls
top governed speed
Starter position
muffler delete
fuel pump
etc.

For what its worth no mention of paint or decals.

Looks like you figured it out, if you go on parts tree it can tell you what it was intended for, the spec numbers are often just the configuration for certain manufacturers such as ODG but generic engines close to spec could be used.
